Welcome to the Southwest/Texas Popular Culture and American Culture Association!
April 2012
Happy spring! We have a brief announcements for this month:
First, we are hosting a Logo Contest for a new graphic identity for the SW/TX PCA/ACA. See the full details and download the entry for here: Call for Submissions. The deadline for submissions is June 15, 2012. The contest is open to anyone, so please share this information with the artistically-inclined friends, graphic arts programs at schools with which you're affiliated or an alumni, and your social networks. And did we mention there's a $500 prize?
Third, the preliminary 2013 CFP is now available. Detailed CFPs for individual areas will be forthcoming and all available by August 1, 2012. To increase scheduling efficiency and speed, proposals for the 2013 conference are due by Nov. 16, 2012.
Thanks to everyone who attended and participated in our 33rd annual conference, February 8-11, 2012! This year’s conference was a success due to your presentations, attendance at panel sessions and special events, and overall support of the Southwest/Texas Popular Culture and American Culture Association. Special thanks also go to our featured speakers, Dr. Alison Macor, our 2012 Peter C. Rollins Book Award winner, and Mr. David Peterson, president of the Language Creation Society (www.conlang.org) and language creator for HBO’s Game of Thrones, as well as to everyone who helped us remember our Executive Director, Dr. Phil Heldrich, and organizational founder, Susan Rollins, both of whom passed away from cancer-related complications this past year.
We are also saddened to say goodbye to Sally Sanchez, our fearless Program Coordinator of several years, who will be retiring from SWTX this year. Thank you, Sally, for all your hard work, dedication, and tireless energy in helping make SWTX a truly wonderful conference experience! You will be missed!
Next year’s conference will be February 13-16, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In the near future, this site will be undergoing renovations and when we roll out the new website early this summer, we’ll have more information about next year’s theme, calls for papers, and other info.
Among our current news are two items: First, Tamy Burnett has joined the SWTX executive team as the Public Relations Coordinator, and can be reached at swtxpca.org@gmail.com (please note the change of organizational email address in your email contact lists).
Second, we will shortly be announcing a contest for a new SWTX logo. We know that among our members' many talents, several of you are gifted graphic artists, and we encourage you to starting thinking and sketching -- we look forward to your entries! Watch the website for forthcoming contest details.
See you in Albuquerque in 2013!
